Allison O’Toole Joins Second Harvest Heartland After United States of Care Role

Allison O’Toole, a seasoned nonprofit leader and changemaker with experience at the United States of Care, has been appointed as the new CEO of Second Harvest Heartland. O’Toole’s selection followed a comprehensive national search, culminating in her succeeding long-time CEO Rob Zeaske. O’Toole brings significant experience in healthcare policy and a deep understanding of the critical link between food and health.

Prior to joining Second Harvest Heartland, O’Toole served as the Senior Director of State Affairs at the United States of Care. This experience, coupled with her previous role as CEO of MNsure, a complex healthcare organization, equipped her with the skills necessary to navigate intricate systems and drive meaningful change. Board member Greg Hilding highlighted O’Toole’s proven leadership abilities, operational expertise, and strategic thinking as key factors in her selection. Her experience leading MNsure within a dynamic industry demonstrated her capabilities in managing large-scale operations and fostering positive change.

O’Toole’s arrival signals Second Harvest Heartland’s commitment to expanding its reach and impact on hunger relief efforts. Marsha Shotley, Chief Philanthropy Officer, emphasized the organization’s readiness to scale operations and partnerships to effectively address food insecurity, with O’Toole leading the charge. The organization aims to enhance its food sourcing and distribution networks to better serve communities in need.

Beginning in February, O’Toole plans to immerse herself in Second Harvest Heartland’s operations. She intends to prioritize building relationships with staff and familiarizing herself with the organization’s extensive network of partner agencies. This approach mirrors the successful onboarding strategy of her predecessor.

Second Harvest Heartland is well-positioned for continued growth and positive impact under O’Toole’s leadership. The organization’s experienced leadership team and strong network of hunger-relief partners provide a solid foundation for future success. O’Toole’s expertise, combined with the organization’s established infrastructure, promises a new chapter in the fight against hunger.
