How to Use a Car Door Lockout Tool

An air wedge is an essential tool in a car lockout kit. This inflatable device creates a gap between the car door and frame, allowing access for unlocking tools. To use it, insert the air wedge into the gap and inflate it just enough to create space. A trim stick, a thin plastic tool, can be used alongside the air wedge to gently pry open the gap and maneuver past weatherstripping. Applying soapy water can help prevent the weatherstripping from tearing. Positioning the air wedge near the rear upper corner of the door provides optimal access and minimizes the risk of damage.

It’s crucial to inflate the air wedge gradually, using only the necessary pressure. Excessive force can stress the door latch and potentially cause permanent damage. Remember, the door is made of steel and can retain its shape if bent.

The trim stick itself can be a valuable tool for gaining entry. In certain vehicles with sliding windows, the trim stick may be enough to manipulate the window and unlock the door. This technique can be especially effective on older truck models with non-seamless sliding windows.
