Reviving a Classic: 1995 Miata M-Edition Restoration Project

The meticulous journey of restoring our 1995 Miata M-Edition is well underway. We’ve reached a significant phase where the car is largely stripped down, eagerly awaiting its transformation with fresh paint and a revitalized drivetrain. A crucial initial step was to thoroughly examine the floorpan, an area potentially susceptible to rust in many vehicles.

Interior Inspection and Refinement

Our inspection of the Miata’s floorpan was met with pleasant surprise. It was found to be in remarkably good condition, free from any concerning rust issues. The only rust обнаруженный was superficial, located on the metal covers for the fuel pump and fuel hoses. This is a common problem in Miatas, often resulting from leaks in the convertible top rain rail. To address this, we are set to replace these two covers along with their hardware. A new rain rail is also on the list for installation when we fit a brand new convertible top to the car, ensuring long-term protection against water ingress.

While the door panels were removed, granting us easy access, we took the opportunity to enhance the functionality of the power windows. We replaced the window bushings and applied fresh lubricant to the window regulators. This proactive maintenance aims to restore the power windows to their original, smooth, and swift operation. Furthermore, all other interior components that could potentially obstruct the upcoming paintwork have been carefully removed. The seats, while currently out of the car, are slated for a comprehensive restoration of their own at a later stage in the project.

Exterior Disassembly for Painting

Preparation for the new paint job involved a systematic removal of all exterior components. The bumpers, mirrors, signal lights, marker lights, taillights, and all external trim have been detached from the car’s body. The doors, fenders, hood, trunk lid, and rear finish panel are scheduled to be removed by the skilled technicians at the body shop during the paint preparation phase.

This meticulous disassembly process served a dual purpose. Firstly, it ensures a comprehensive and flawless paint application. Secondly, and equally importantly, it allowed us to conduct a detailed examination of the car’s structure hidden beneath these panels. We were looking for any indications of previous accidents or repairs that might have been concealed. This thorough inspection is vital to ensure the structural integrity of the vehicle and address any underlying issues before proceeding with the restoration.

Drivetrain Separation for Body Work

To maintain the car’s mobility as a rolling chassis throughout this phase, we opted to keep the suspension system intact. We proceeded with the removal of the engine, transmission, differential, powerplant frame, driveshaft, and axles. This strategic approach allows us to easily maneuver the car around the workshop as needed. Simultaneously, it provides unrestricted access to all engine bay components that are also slated for removal and refurbishment.

While the Miata is at the body shop undergoing its paint transformation, our attention will shift to the mechanical aspects. We will commence the process of replacing and installing mechanical components onto the “rollerskate” chassis. These parts will be sourced from the NB donor car, ensuring compatibility and enhancing the performance of the restored M-Edition. Utilizing the correct Car Tools Mx will be crucial during this phase to ensure precise and efficient work.

Stay connected for our upcoming weekly updates as we continue to breathe new life and enhanced performance into this iconic 1995 Miata M-Edition. The journey of restoration is a testament to the enduring appeal of this classic roadster.
