About the Career Readiness Initiative
Development and Validation of the NACE Career Readiness Competencies
The Career Readiness Initiative by NACE was launched in 2015 to address a critical need for both new college graduates and the professionals who guide their career development. The initiative aimed to establish a shared understanding of the essential elements for launching and advancing a successful career, create a common language for discussing career needs and expectations, and define a foundational set of competencies for career success.
The initial task force, comprising NACE members from career services and university relations, developed the career readiness definition and associated competencies. These were subsequently reviewed and updated in 2017 by a member task force to incorporate feedback from professionals applying these competencies with students.
Further, NACE collaborated with SkillSurvey to identify and validate specific behaviors associated with each competency.
In 2020, a member task force undertook a comprehensive review and revision of the competencies. NACE and SkillSurvey concurrently completed a crucial validation phase to identify sample behaviors. The task force presented their revision recommendations to the NACE membership, receiving over 300 member responses. The revised competencies reflect these valuable member insights, ensuring they remain relevant and impactful for today’s evolving workforce.
